Lucius Petrosidius

The gold eagle waving, subtitled by
S P Q R. The long pole cries:
Senatuus Populusque Romanus,
The Senate and People of Rome.

The aquilifer Lucius Petrosidius,
surrounded by Gauls outside his camp,
clutching the Senate and People of Rome,
Threw them bodily over the barrier
And died of a thousand barbarian cuts,
Separated from his standard.
His standard! Such things
Were all captured so long ago
As to be forgotten by our modern armies,
And by the senate and people also.
